James

by Percival Everett

Percival Everett retells Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the point of view of Jim, the enslaved man who escapes down the Mississippi with Huck. This Jim is a sharp, literate man who hides his intelligence behind the dialect white people expect to hear. The novel won the 2024 National Book Award for Fiction and the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
