In 1965, twenty-year-old Frankie McGrath, raised in a sheltered Southern California family, joins the Army Nurse Corps and is sent to Vietnam. The novel follows her through the chaos of combat hospitals and then home to an America that doesn't want to hear about the war, or about the women who served in it.

Jim's Review

🐛
Hannah does what she does best: a big, sweeping historical drama with a heroine thrown into the deep end. The Vietnam chapters are vivid and harrowing, and the second half, as Frankie comes home to a country that acts as if women were never there, is where the book finds its real subject. Some late plot turns lean melodramatic, but the tribute to forgotten veterans hits hard. Content note: war trauma and addiction. Four worms — keep tissues within reach.
