Book three widens the map at last, trading the war college for a voyage beyond Navarre, and the dragons are as scene-stealing as ever. The plot moves faster than Iron Flame's, but it also leans hard on cliffhangers and on the Violet-and-Xaden push-and-pull, and new readers will be lost without the first two books fresh in mind. Content note: explicit scenes and plenty of violence. Three worms — a must for Empyrean fans, not a place to start.
